Re the script, there is no $40 version thats worth your time and social is hard work to get to critical mass with real people. We probably spent over $2,000 on the script and plugins and if you add the development time to customize them etc waaaay more
add to that 4 people working for over a year to build and grow community, load the site with content and get a working social network going.
