Thats exactly right. An election today is a popularity contest, nothing more. Someone has to convince people they can solve 20 year problems with a 4 year plan. They have to be popular with certain groups, they have to say what those groups want to hear and then they need a broader appealing message like "forward" to give the lemmings something to parrot while arguing about things they know nothing about to cement the deal. Doesn't matter who is elected. The economy will still be cyclical, radical fundamentalists will still be radical fundamentalists, rogue states will still be rogue states, education in the USA will still suck, single parents will still be shitting out kids to keep our prison system afloat. and so on ... and so on...
The biggest problems in this country is not who's in office or who is President. The biggest problems are a lack of identity, a lack of a sense of who we are and what we stand for. A lack of what it means to be American. A growing disdain for success and successful people. A growing sense of entitlement and waning sense of accountability among an increasingly dumber population. The list of "Whats wrong" is huge and it has nothing to do with Obama or Romney. It has to do ironically, with the people that will vote for them.
Empires die when values attitudes change.
