Two factors will probably be the size of your site, and the keywords you are targeting.
If you're going to have a site with thousands of indexed pages, it will probably be easier for you to rank your category pages for your micro-niche keywords without having an EMD.
If you're going after highly competitive keywords, EMDs would probably help, and be worth the $100 you spend on them.
I'd think it would also depend on whether, or not you're using blackhat tactics...
