I was 17 years old and had only arrived in Japan a day earlier, when I decided to venture out to see Tokyo even though I spoke virtually no Japanese. I ended up dropping into a movie theater after seeing the marquee for Emmanuelle.
The movie was shown in French with Japanese subtitles (which I could not read), so for the most part I could not understand the dialogue, but it hardly mattered since the cinematography was so good.
Emmanuelle was one of the most beautifully filmed erotic movies I had ever watched, and it stands the test of time quite well.
I saw the movie years later dubbed into English, and it lost much of it's beauty due to the jarring voice of the dubbed in voices.
What a beautiful woman she was. It is so sad to hear that she passed so young.
BTW, I loved how they used the King Crimson song "Larks Tongue in Aspic" for the opium den scene too
