the problem in the uk is that not everyone has a garage. so charging for a lot of people is not easy.

That is because England is the size of a postage stamp. In the USA we have STATES larger than the whole of England. A FIFTY GRAND USD starting price rules out a large percentage of the people here and unless the buyer is located in a state with one of the SIX charging stations, the Supercharger is fucking yard art.
Plans are also afoot to tax drivers by mileage driven so the whole "no fuel tax" thing is on the verge of death.
England:

Population - 51,446,000
USA:
Area - 3,794,101 sq. mi.
Population - 312,560,000
USA has just over 75 times more area than England and 6 times the population.
