Well, I for one didn't spend any time trying to take the site down, but I guess I would have if it had been my site that was hotlinked. I almost got shut down years ago because I got hotlinked and had a bandwidth bill that was almost as much as my rent. Luckily I found someone to host my sites really cheap until I could find a new host. Took me forever to pay that old bandwidth bill off. Luckily, my host alerted me to the problem and taught me how to install .htaccess, but before that I had no idea how to prevent hotlinking, or even that I needed to.
I was no idiot, just not informed of the need to protect my bandwidth.
I understand that you feel this action isn't necessary, but there are some who do. Just shows you why there is a need for freedom of speech, so many different opinions.
