$1 = 8 meals = 12 cents per meal.

Rice for example is around $1 per pound when purchased in bulk.

1lb of rice is about 450 grams, a serving of rice is about 50 grams. So there are 9 servings per pound of rice.

That means each serving is a cost of 11 cents.

Bam, there you go. And that was off the top of my head real quick. I'm sure their system is way more complicated.
