Apartment scam:
Take an ad out on Craig's List saying you are renting a rent-controlled apartment for $1000, first come, first serve.
Then setup appointments at an apartment where you know the owner has gone on vacation or the apartment is sitting empty.
Show people, take their money (cash only), disappear.
Now, I'm not advocating this....but I've seen this scam several times in New York City (and elsewhere).
Alternate Plan: Ask mom.
