Isla Mujeres has a cool pier and at the end of it there are a bunch of pylons that keep a dozen or so 6' to 12' nurse sharks penned in and for a few bucks you can go in and swim with them...
Definitely recommend making the drive to Chichen Itza - just spending your entire trip drinking and suntanning would be missing out on some very cool stuff to do there.
