Michael, I agree completely that current deficit levels are unsustainable (not to mention the both screwing us silly part), but here's the immediate problem: history has shown that austerity during bad economic times
virtually always leads to disaster.
The stimulus packages that began in 2008 were successful in staving off a much deeper recession.

While Republicans have derided the 2009 stimulus as a failure(1),
the consensus among economists has been that it helped stave off deeper job losses and supported a modest recovery.
