Actually it was. That's why it was called "the SPACE race" but not "the Moon race", "the Mars race", "the Alpha Centauri race" etc. And please don't show me wikipedia links. Simple open the English dictionary and read what exactly "space" does mean. First one in space is a winner. Everything else is just a senseless twaddle.
