The space race (first Earth satellite and first man in the space) was won by the USSR. The USA won the Moon race only. This is just one of many way stations in the endless road to stars (Moon, Mars, first exoplanet outside the Solar System etc...)
P.S. Nazi not just "helped" the USA. They have built all the US space program from the scratch. Wernher von Braun the key person in the US space programs was a Nazi SS officer. I doubt the USA had a successful space program without him. |
The Space Race wasn't about who was first to get to space. It wasn't really much of a race at that point. Educate yourself a little bit:

Sputnik was just the beginning. It didn't really end until 1975 by which point the US had already landed on the moon multiple times. Russia never made it to the moon. And don't get me started on the Russian Space Shuttle program.
