I have a fresh 3.8x installed, and created a bridge from my site's login system. Everything works great. Now, after doing a few hours of work, I am wrestling with the idea of getting the 4.2x version.
Should I? Will I see any better functionality? I don't need menu's, blogs, or cms bullshit. Just forums with some bells and whistles. And I'm not sure if I will have to re-hack my bridge.
Thoughts?

You will not see any better functionality.
I suggest creating a new database, installing the 4.2x to see if you like it. (I prefer the 3.8.x)
If you're happy with 4.2.x you can easily move your 3.8.x database to the 4.2.x.
To upgrade, you'll be stuck with 4.2.x with no other options.
