If the police decide to give a press conference and have relatives or friends speak at it. THEN THEY ARE THE SUSPECTS AT SOME LEVEL.
It's an old tactic as long as the hills, they do it to apply psychological pressure, to keep them busy so they can't hide evidence, try to read some body language and watch for any slips. Basically they must have had some doubts right at the beginning of this and were just piling it on for days, but obviously cant tell the press.
