Whatever you can build into any website you can build into Wordpress. Wordpress is just a bloated blog app and I guess framework
I'm not familiar with the types of sites you are referring to and it's a pretty specific thing I'd be surprised if many are, but I'm sure you can integrate the inventory feed you're talking about pretty easily like you would anything else
Whether you make a plugin or not just gives more portability.
