But when Montcalm Publishing, which was a large adult and mainstream magazine publisher, went broke I got to see their financials. The decline in their magazine sales was brutal, well known skin magazines selling 3,000 copies per issue.
Old dudes are probably the remaining skin mag buyers.
I'd love to see Playboy and Penthouse's real numbers of paid sales per issue.

If I had to guess I'd say Hustler is keeping their magazines open for vanity purposes only. I quit running porn stores in 2006 and I've said it on here before, even back then we couldn't give Hustler titles away, and they were always far and away our best magazine sellers.
Up until around 2003 we would get several hundred copies of Hustler, along with a few hundred copies of Barely Legal, Hustler Humor, etc and always sell them out within a week. This was pretty much standard among all 20 of our stores. We never once had to send back a single copy of any of their titles, but after 2003 sales dwindled more and more to where we were always sending back at least half of our shipment, and by 2006 we would maybe get 20 copies of Hustler per store and be lucky to sell 10 of them. I know a lot of stores have quit carrying porn mags entirely with the exception of the cheap magazine packs that have 2 or 3 old issues of various magazines, and they only carry those because of old inventory they are sitting on that they didn't return to the publisher in time...
