I think it's wrong what both sides did. It could potentially have turned out a LOT worse if he had done nothing and just asked them politely to go away. That doesn't change the liability in a civil suit a lot, especially not if some kind of plea deal got worked out if he got charged for it.
If you had a dog as example your home owners insurance would cover whatever the dog did if it ran away from you when you opening the door.

No argument; if the story is/was true this would be huge trouble, at least in the State of California. I am just saying that jumping in as the parent would be pointless. Legally, that is not an issue unless you happened to witness the attack and it traumatized you. (Again, CA law).
