To people in 1900 it was completely normal for women not to vote and be excluded from leadership roles and so forth. History is just packed full of examples and it's just a little empathy or compassion needed to see the other side of it. To a gay person, it's simply about equality and nothing else. They're not asking for anything special, they're asking to not be faced with the intangible yet tangible "no gays allowed" signs placed in front of them by ignorant people who don't know any better.

When blacks were integrated into our armed forces, fully 80% of active duty soldiers said they shouldn't be. It took a strong leader to make the right call despite the ignorant masses who thought otherwise.
