It isn't so much that they hate gays as it it is they don't see them as being their equal. They are saying, "You are gay, my religion makes me believe that because you are gay you should not be allowed to marry another gay person. I can like you, but we are not equals because I am free to marry and you are not."
Now if you took the word gay out of those sentences and replaced it with with word black people would brand you as ignorant, a racist and a person filled with hate.
