Did anyone have lizard theories before the TV series V?

To make the script more marketable, the American fascists were re-cast as man-eating extraterrestrials"
Pity they thought the 'average American viewer' couldn't handle seeing Americans as fascists. I liked V, but having them as human would be far more interesting and (obviously) realistic.
