Sometimes that is exactly the case.
A friend of mine is going with his wife and three kids to Disneyworld a little later this summer. They are here in Oregon so it is a cross country trip. Initially they just assumed it would be too expensive to fly everyone so they were going to drive. They thought they could drive straight through just taking turns driving, but once my buddy who has driven across the country convinced them otherwise they realized how long the trip would really take.
Once they added up the cost of gas, food and a few hotels along the way they realized it was actually more expensive than flying. They were able to get a deal on reduced airfare for two the kids and with all the travel time and money saved they are going to be able to stay an extra 5 days in Orlando and still spend about the same as if they would have driven.
