You don't even need chemicals. If you truly BELIEVE something, there could be an effect. It is not a 100% slam dunk but there's a reason why drug chemical trials always factor in a PLACEBO EFFECT.
Now, voodoo stuff, specially if you live in a culture immersed in such traditions and beliefs, can be really hard on the psyche. Even without chemicals.
