If you are talking about a site with all original content and buckets of traffic, it would be a poor trade for them to effectively trade links with some Alexa 300k blog directory. For a blog with 20 visits a day, the blog directory can provide significant traffic on initial listing.

Agreed, but what is the long term effect of it? I really should've named the thread "So whats the verdict with blog directories and SE results?"
My main objective is to get traffic flowing and to get backlinks going so I can climb the rankings faster. But once those page 1 rankings on the directories are gone i'm left with a site full of directory links and me buried in the sand. lol It's worked in the past but I wonder...is there a better and smarter way to do it for longer term results?
Some of these bloggers are sitting on page one with 100 directory links on there blogs. Then there are some which have virtually no directory listings and are just linking to their own other blogs and they are on page one. Which is the best way is the question. I know that MP has done extremely well in this field. I admire his work and that keeps me motivated these days! To make good money one day.
