False.
I can use my thumb-based trackball better than a regular mouse.
Moving your entire hand (and by extension your arm) is not as stable as keeping four fingers, your hand and your arm stationary and moving just your thumb.

For you perhaps...
The accuracy of use and resulting learning curve is a matter of preference, as someone mentioned earlier.
And as for involuntary thumb movements? Simply take your thumb off the ball.
(it's just as comfortable)
