This most recent attack could be the result of a new chemical mix that is more potent and is based on some of the chemicals they use in voodoo ceremonies.
Went to Port au Prince, Haiti a short while ago. That place is fucked up to say the least.
I thought the Serpent and the Rainbow was "just a movie", but that shit has a real scientific basis. They drug a voodoo victim with a cocktail of datura stramonium and other chemicals, bury them alive, dig them up a short while later and then go through the streets whipping the person.
Pretty much the person loses independent rational thought and the psychotic break is permanent. They'll never be the same again.
This might not be the case in this scenario, but it only makes sense that someone could likely make a blend of street drugs and voodoo compounds that give a greater, long lasting high.

Tampa Times is reporting an interview with Haitian guys girlfriend. She believes he was drugged by some people in the Haitian scene.
For those who have not read it, The Serpent and the Rainbow is an excellent read by Harvard ethno-botanist, Wade Davis. The chemicals are used for power and control. There is an interesting and disturbing chapter about African slavery, pre-slavery days and the revolt led by the Maroons... In Africa, before slavery to europe and americas, african kings used to thin out the herd by grinding glass into the wine at festivals...pretty unpleasant death as your insides are sliced up as you digest ...
My guess is the old guy pissed someone off or the face-eater pissed someone off. The two were put on a collision course.
I used to live in Marrakech, Morocco. Datura leaves are still used to dose people...and if you piss me off and I catch you in the maghreb you bet I can blind you and make you go crazy with some pretty little poppies...lol
Science, not science fiction.
