This doesn't surprise me. I watched documentary a while back about innocent people convicted of major crimes. There have been some studies done that show as many as 85% of the people who witness a crime get at least some of the facts about what they saw wrong.
There are a lot of reasons for it, but in that study they showed multiple women who were raped and got a very good look at the rapists face could not pick the guy out of a lineup and people who saw a crime occur often got major details of what happened wrong. It was pretty interesting and scary.
