I to have served in a neighborhood watch and we were instructed not to confront but to follow any strange person in the neighborhood until they left the neighborhood and not to confront but to call 911 if we witnessed an actual crime being committed or considered the person's actions to be questionable/suspicious. I carried a pistol but not all members of the neighborhood watch carried but most...if not all...had a shotgun in the car when they patrolled.
For Zimmerman to have followed Trayvon would have been his duty as a member of the neighborhood watch. To confront Trayvon would probably not be considered as being his duty as a member of the neighbor hood watch...but according to Zimmerman's father he did not intentionally confront Trayvon.
Zimmerman's father has stated that his son told him that he had lost track of Trayvon and was returning to his vehicle when he encountered Trayvon again and at that point words were exchanged and Trayvon punched him...breaking his nose and knocking him down...and then Trayvon started banging his head against the ground...which caused two seperate lacerations to his head and it was during this scuffle that Zimmerman shot Trayvon.
It has been reported that witnesses saw Trayvon on top of Zimmerman and reported that Zimmerman was yelling for help.
