I think he said he paid the model 500 bucks. He clearly borrowed the location, and he already said he borrowed the kit to shoot, because his is too old fashioned, or pawned.
The idea was we could all get to see what a 3k scene looks like. However, what everyone saw was what a 500 buck scene looks like.
