Gun owners just assume that when attacked they'll be able to arm themselves AND be able to defend themselves. I disagree. I'm forty-three years olds, overweight, and if you break into my house at 3am in the morning I'm not going to be able to find my fucking slippers in time no less arm myself.
And yes, I do have firearms in my house. But I'm no illusion I'll be able to arm myself quickly enough. This is why I have an alarm system.
