Domain names, while still very important from a technical aspect (email, webhosting, etc), are so-yesterday from a user perspective...
Most users navigate to sites via search engines (including those integrated into most web browsers / smart-phones) and social networking.
Adding more TLDs helps ICANN and its constituents, namely registries and their registrars, bring in more bucks, but overall, to most people, is a waste / creates more confusion...
Search engines will benefit though, since even more users will simply type in what they're seeking / brand name and letting the search engine figure out the best location to direct them to.
