We will manually crop some horizontal thumbs if the gallery is good enough. Also, really couldn't find a way to display horizontal and vertical thumbs together that looked right and didn't have too much white space.
One big idea with the new site redesign was to get rid of as much white space as we could. Felt the old design had way too much blank space on the backgrounds, menus, etc... with grey/white space. Esp. when not viewing the site in a window.
