Unless you have a truly massive amount of content, this is definitely the way to go.
The way we do this for customers using the Elevated X CMS to manage their pay sites is to have a separate trial area or multiple trial areas that limit access. You can then only allow a trial user to watch a certain number of videos per day before being sent to an upgrade page, or - only allow viewing of photos but block access to video and any bonus content like plugin feeds and cams.
The trial members can still click around and see the whole site and can watch video trailers. Often the "tease" this setup creates is enough to generate solid trial to full member conversions.
If you're not using software to run your sites that has these kinds of features you might want to experiment and build a static trial area that only gives away a limited amount of content.
