They may have been "Saddam's own people" on paper, but they were allied with Iran. Those gas attacks and the threat by Saddam to put gas on missles and lob them into Iran is what ended the bloody Iraq-Iran war.
And for the record, just after the attacks the USA took sides with Saddam and placed blame upon Iran for the attacks just as we blame Japan for Hiroshima.
Anyone who blames Saddam for killing the Kurds must ask themselves why Harry Truman wasn't put to death for targeting Japanese civilians to end a war also.
