The plugin may be easier to use but if you want to play you could try fooling around with time remapping.
This is where you can find it. It is greyed out because I don't have any footage in my time-line, just a quick screenie since I didn't find it as a plugin. Technically you should be able to achieve a similar effect using both tools. I think twixtor has some more functions and may be easier to use but the other option is free so that's up to you.
If you are new to AE, check out videocopilot.com.
They have awesome tutes in generalbut you can prob find something on time remapping or twixtor there. You can find twixtor tutes on youtube for sure but prob lower quality.
Since you were unsure about your cameras settings with twixtor i would get the 30 day trial download and see how it goes.
