John Lassiter from Pixar tells the story that 20 years ago, all their rendering farm equipment took 30 minutes to spit out a frame of film ready animation.
Nowadays, he said with a smile, we have orders of magnitude more equipment and faster computers, and it takes... 30 minutes to render a frame of animation.
If you look at the difference between toy story 1 and what they're doing today, you can see where the extra time goes.
Rendering is irrelevant. xbox and ps3 games render their cutscenes and gameplay on the fly, and it looks great, doesn't have anything to do with final quality or the work it took to make.
The question is probably "what budget do you have", which is the difference between a slideshow and a pixar movie.
