each ear has a AAA rechargeable in them, which recharges when you stand them on the dock (which also powers them down).
My only gripe is the stupid +/- volume buttons... get this:
underneath the right ear, there are 5 tiny buttons in this order:

+ on/off - L R

I mean what a stupid frikken place to put an on/off button... impossible to adjust the volume without touching the sucker, cos you can't see the damn buttons! The *only* aid is the on/off has a mark on you can sense with your finger. Still, dummass design and the only flaw I can find with them.
