And no, I doubt there is much adverting opportunity on Facebook for Thais. They don't consume online like westerners do. Very few have credit cards. It's mostly an SMS, ATM payment, and cash society.
If this is true I would think that there would be a lot of Westerners discussing the potential future ramifications of this on Facebook itself, Reddit, 4Chan and the other usual spots where online discussions, debates and memes get started. Maybe Thailand is the first place they are trying this and it is so new that most Westerners don't know about it yet?

I also would think that there are plenty of advertising opportunities to advertise various products and services that accept payment in SMS, debits & cash in Thailand to Thai people. You know the usual broad mainstream advertisers like cell phone services and many others. Just like in Noth America, there has to be more money in selling ads given what must be milions and millions of page impressions each day even in a country like Thailand than there is in charging mostly poor people to use Facebook in that country.
