Once you open the 'pin', yes it's a picture...but you click the picture and typically it's linked to a blog post or shopping page. It's like a big site where you organize and publicly share your bookmarks.
Based on how fast shit I've pinned...gets repinned & boards followed, seems like it could be used as one helluva marketing tool to drive traffic to blogs.
