Interesting to see so many people here are familiar with Thailand. I guess I shouldn't be surprised... I lived in Bangkok and CM for a while, and visited most of Thailand over the years.
In Thailand, rent and basic food - most people's biggest expenses - are cheap. But everything else is expensive. It's a place you can live on the cheap if you don't do much, just sit around...
Thailand taxes imports very heavily and doesn't produce much on their own. So everything is imported and carries a super high price. A $20,000 car costs 40,000-50,000 in Thailand, for example. Pretty much all electronics, home goods/appliances, brand name clothing, foods like steak/lobster/crab/strawberries/etc, are more expensive in Thailand.
Visa rules are becoming more and more strict by the year. It is almost impossible to become a 'permanent resident'. If you are not on retirement visa, you are on a very volatile short chain of visa runs, or edu visas.
Working anything as a foreigner is very hard. There are many professions that are 'reserved' by law for Thais only.
So is owning land.
As a foreigner, you are mostly limited to hooking up with the dark-skinned, low-class women. Women from typical middle class are almost always off limits to foreigners.
It's OK place and lifestyle is OK too. It's a good place to burn money - very poor place to try to make money.
Vast majority of people's satisfaction with Thailand goes down the longer they stay here.
