Checks and checks only. I've never had model complain about getting paid by check. Some have had concerns about cashing a check without their own bank account and I have taken many models to the bank after shoots to make sure they got paid.

A few reasons for this, even though some have already been said:

1: Proof that payment was made. A model can always claim that you never paid her the cash or that you claimed one amount on the paperwork but paid another or never paid at all. Receipts can be forged but a canceled check from the bank will be on record with the bank and can easily be retrieved should there ever be a question.

2: Accounting. It just makes sense.

3: A business check tells a model you actually run a legit business. If you don't have a business checking account, which a lot of "producers" do not, you most likely are not a legit business.

4: 3 minutes after the model leaves and you discover your releases, wardrobe, toys, cameras, etc... are missing, you can stop payment before the check is cashed. This sort of thing has happened to me and a lot of other producers I know.

5: It's another way of confirming the model's identity. Not only have you checked the model's ID but so has the bank. This will go a long way in covering your ass should a model come back later claiming she was under age.

6: No lawyer has ever told me to pay a model in cash but several have told me to pay by company check.

7: Cash on hand is a liability in a world filled with those who have questionable intent. All it takes is one model to tell a friend that she saw a pile of cash in your studio and now you're a target for robbery.
