I have to take issue with the 1 in 10,000 number.
Assuming that Modelmayhem, sexyjobs and onemodelplace are the largest three where erotic models advert, and that only a portion of models who are available advert (if you don't accept this, you don't know shit), and that the census says there are 40 million women in the age range we are talking about, then the ratio is more 1 in 1000.
For prostitutes, who have less risk of discovery but much more risk in other ways, the numbers based on number of arrests (and not all are arrested) are 100,000.
""It is difficult to estimate the number of persons who currently work, or have ever worked as prostitutes for many reasons including the various definitions of prostitution. National arrest figures [in the United States] range over 100,000. The National Task Force on Prostitution suggests that over one million people in the US have worked as prostitutes in the United States, or about 1% of American women."
I know that prostitutes and porn talent differ greatly, but considering that porn has the added attraction of the possibility fame, such as it is, I very much doubt the ratio is 1 to 100 to porn talent.
