He can still get a smaller size SSD (120GB) and use it as the boot drive (with his OS installed on it) for speed and get a 2nd hard drive 1, 2, 3+TB for storage (7200rpm, 5400rpm, 5900rpm etc..). This way he can have the best of both worlds.
For the 2nd bigger hdd he can just make it an external one.
