Another advantage of Facebook's huge hosting presence is they have direct access to backbone providers and peers - that makes filtering out / shunting a DDOS attack a cinch.
To have any noticeable impact on a service the size of Facebook, Anonymous would likely need to infiltrate many of their servers and attack it from within.
Other potential methods would involve targeting Facebook's APIs and/or related services that interface with Facebook, such as Zynga gaming sites.
On a related note, from what I recall, Anonymous DDOSed PayPal, which has a far smaller internet presence than Facebook, awhile back - few people notice beyond some error messages and brief inconvenience - for most, PayPal kept working throughout the DDOS attack(s).
