If it turns itself off, the gas control valve or thermocouple is bad. the thermocouple tells the gas control valve that the pilot is on. It generates a tiny electrical current when its hot. if the pilot goes out, the current is not there and the control valve turns off the gas. So if either goes bad, it shuts itself off.
