Not nessicerially right next to the street -Plenty of places have there own gardens and are set back from the road...
Normally, when you enter a house in the UK, you have the 'Front Door' which leads to a small space, and then another door that takes you inside the living area of the house...
Its that 'in between' bit, we call a porch.
