Absolutely. Bad things happen to hosting companies and to data centers all the time. When The Planet caught fire, thousands of servers melted. If your hosting company was only backup, your backup would have melted in the track right next to your main server.
Backups must be:
Offsite
Automatic
Tested
Quickly available
Rotated to cover multiple dates
For a web server, "offsite" means not hosted in the same DC as your main server, with the same company.
