First let me say that I don't have any knowledge of the setup @ freeones
Their ptr said uslb1 and given their size i think it is safe to assume they are doing some sort of load balancing. If this is plain layer2, layer4 or layer7 i don't know.
I believe load balancing can be a great tool against dos attacks. Here is a great read on this topic:

If it really was a ddos attack you probably would have seen slow loading of the front page while they attempt to null route the sources and links filling up, but you shouldn't have seen the 503 error.
Besides that, I can't really see why freeones would be target of a ddos attack other than extortion.
