You should pay the man something since you have the job in your hands. He posted the logs where he sent you files and if that wasn't true you probably would have denied it as soon as you saw it. You confirmed his statements are legit by pasting from the same logs and you did post in there that you had no idea how to accomplish the tacking id thing. Would probably save you some grief if you just met Black in the middle and paid him some money for what he has done.

Edit: 50 angry programmers.
