I think you want a trade association.

A union would require that no one could work in a non-management capacity without joining and working only under the union contract, so that labor (non-management) could demand higher pay and benefits than non-union workers are willing to work for. For example the union would set a certain pay rate for people doing banners and if you weren't good enough to be paid $100 per banner it would be illegal for you to do them at all.

In adult most of us are management, except perhaps for models. There is no unskilled labor force to be represented by a union, and setting a specific pay rate for all SEO people would be even more ridiculous than setting a certain rate for all electricians. The prary result would be that the bottom 50% would be unemployed because their work isn't worth the union established rate.

A trade association could take a stand on issues like .xxx . A couple exist. You may want to look into supporting some of the existing associations. The Electronic Frontier Foundation serves that role regarding free speech issues and will probably be our primary defenders when the Clintons and their friends try a fourth time with CDA III, making .xxx mandatory.
