Think about it.
Do you think plastering the web with thousands, tens of thousands of unnatural backlinks is really going to help you ?
What you're paying for with many of these services is link spam, if you get the service at all.
An effective linking strategy is less about numbers and more about quality, diversity and while it may be to your short term advantage to plaster a link to your site on every poorly maintained blog, forum, social network site around it's never a good long term thing.
It is true however that highly ranking sites have many backlinks from a large number of unique referring domains.
